Blogging Question

I would like to create a website for the next school year that contains my homework assignments and news for each of my classes. I looked at schoolnotes.com and classhomework.com, but there were various things I didn't like about them: ads, layout, accessibility, so I'm thinking of simply creating a blog that I can update daily after school gets out.

I would like to have the blog divided into different math class sections, so that a student or parent can simply click on, say, precalculus, and that information is all in one place. I have not found this capability information on the web, but I believe I've seen it on other blogs (that I of course can't find now). Is there a simple way to do this with an available template, so that I don't have to write (much?) html code?

Does anyone have insight into this? Thanks in advance.

  1. I have been very impressed with wikis. Many of my teachers are using wikis not only to showcase their student's work, but also as a web page. Wikispaces still has wikis for teachers without ads available.

    Hope this helps!

  3. I think weebly.com is exactly what you're looking for. It is free, no ads at all, completely drag-and-drop (no coding). You can see mine at http://tentoni.weebly.com
    Good luck!

Wow, I've never heard of weebly.com. Thanks for sharing the information and your pages. It looks like weebly went to tons of effort to make it usable. Thanks for giving me some ideas. Now I have more options and samples to look at.

  5. On the "new" blogger, you have the capability of using labels. When a label is clicked, only posts that use that label appear.

On the right side of my blog, I have a list of labels that have been used. If you click on one of them, you'll see what I mean.

You may already have been switched to the new blogger automatically, so just below each post you'll see a line to type a label in. You can then customize the term "Labels" on your blog to "Classes" so you can have a list of the courses you teach underneath.

Huh! I'd seen that "label" business before, but I didn't know the capabilities. Thanks for passing that along. Now I have 3 cool options to decide from.

You could also make a google calendar--And have the assignments for different classes be in different colors (as well as other notes, etc.) I think you can open these up for comments, etc so that could be the dialouge part. (I started doing this this past school year, but seeing as how I don't have a computer at school it was too much for me to keep up with....)

You guys are awesome. Now I've learned 4 things. The Google calendar looks very usable, too.

Curses, now how to decide. I see benefits in all 4 options.

  9. I'm working on setting up a new website too. But I think I found the blog you were referring to:
    http://apcalc.blogspot.com/

I like what he has done too. Good luck with your decision.

Oh! I hadn't seen that site (apcalc.blogspot.com), so thanks for the extra example. Good luck on your website, too. I'm still sifting through ideas on all the possibilities of what to include.

There's a site I just learned about called hotchalk.com. I haven't looked at it that thoroughly yet, but it looks like it might be worth investigating.
